The twins were a month old, so things were starting to reach something like normalcy, and that meant work. They'd started easy, heading to Hapes because Jag and Tenel aka had a lot to settle through long meetings of tense not-quite-arguing while Jaina rolled her eyes, and it had the bonus of letting Allana meet her cousins. And then the invitation had been extended to Anakin to meet all his great-grandchildren from this particular universe.

After Anakin arrived, Jaina showed him where his room was and then brought him over to her quarters just in time to watch the boys so Jag could go to a meeting.

"Thanks for the timing," Jaina said just after Jag left. "I was supposed to be in that."

"First, you're a dork," Jaina said. "Second, I've tried very hard to play good Jedi in the Empire. Do you know how nice I've had to pretend to be?"

"Very," Anakin said. "Because people are kind of stupid."

"I can kind of see why they'd be wary of me in particular. It's still annoying," Jaina shrugged. "Whatever, I'll take it so hopefully Dax doesn't have to."

Anakin gently shook the baby's fingers. "You've got the mother thing well in hand, then."

"Just wait until someone's mean to them," Jaina said faux-cheerfully.

"Terrify them," Anakin said, nodding. "You'll only have to do it the once."

"I seem to do that without trying." She was even a little proud. You didn't spend this long earning a reputation and then shy away from it. It'd even helped in her in her last/possibly current job. "Should be a fun Blanche, trying to protect them while also not getting too protected in this environment. But I figure Allana's turned out okay, and she's from Hapes..."

"And that is a terrifying political climate to grow up in," Anakin said. He smiled. "I've done some research."

He wanted his great-granddaughter to be proud of him. Shh.

Jaina raised her eyebrows. "You did research?"

Anakin nodded. "I'm not sure how current it is," he said, "but I pulled up what I could on my comm."

"It's gotten a lot better than it was under Tenel Ka," Jaina said. "She's smart and doesn't play games, and there are far fewer family members trying to kill each other for power now."

"And not because she killed them all off, right? I've read some of the histories."

It wouldn't be a dealbreaker because, well, Anakin had read the histories. Some of these family members didn't take no--or a poisoned glass of wine--for an answer.

"Not as far as I know, and if she has, she had a very good reason," she said, and she truly believed that. "I guess they had some issues a few years ago and that's how Zekk ended up here, but otherwise a lot of the ugliness ended with her awful grandmother. Who I do not miss."

"Well, if you think she was awful, I trust your judgement," Anakin said.

"She encouraged me on purpose while I was falling to the dark side because she wanted someone she thought she could manipulate in charge, and after I turned her down she killed Tenel Ka's mother to try and force me into taking the queen job," Jaina said casually. "It's how Tenel Ka ended up ruling."

"What a bitch."

Anakin has apparently assimilated pretty well to Earth after a decade.

"Tenel Ka is the opposite of that," Jaina assured him. "Allana's in good hands."

"I'm glad to hear that," Anakin said. "She'll be the next Queen Mother?"

"Yep. She's the chume'da now. She takes it very seriously, doesn't seem to have any hangups about it, she takes everything as a lesson for when she's in charge," Jaina said.

Anakin nodded. "Our family has never really lacked in focus when it came to leadership," he said.

"Which is good, when you consider that this family is ridiculous enough that all your great-grandchildren here are princes and princesses," Jaina said, and addressed the boys with, "And neither of you are allowed to let that go to your head."

Neither baby cared.

"My mother would have never believed it," Anakin murmured, trailing a gentle finger along a baby's cheek.

"We've kind of come a long way," Jaina said. Mostly for the better?

"Remind me to thank Obi-Wan when he returns from Tatooine," Anakin said.

"Has he been gone?" Jaina asked.
