The Jedi Temple- Friday afternoon
A day after the siege started, it was no closer to ending. It was still six Jedi against possibly thousands of Sith, but so far they were holding their own, even if there were some more injuries than when they'd started out. The problem was that "holding their own" didn't mean "getting anywhere," and after a day without food or sleep, with fairly constant fighting when they were so badly outnumbered, Jaina was pretty sure she knew how this was going to end. Their attempts to get to the computer core so far hadn't gone well, ending in Sith attacks, and after the second failed attempt to get there the Jedi decided to take a few minutes to regroup.
In that time they'd managed to get a communications feed out of the Temple. The Jedi's security was ridiculously good, and they had no reason to fear that anyone would listen in. The others stood guard against any intruders while Valin and Jysella called their mom to let them know how the entire rest of her family was doing, and then Jaina asked for a couple minutes to call Jag.
She got through right away. News of the Sith attack had probably made the HoloNet, so he'd likely been waiting for some news. "Jaina?"
"Hi," she said, managing a smile despite the situation. "I've only got a few minutes."
"Are you all right?"
"Fine." Jaina didn't see that as a lie as much as her actually believing that she was fine as long as she was functioning. "The Sith have flooded the Temple. We're trying to get the blast doors down so everyone else can get in."
"No luck?"
"Not so far," Jaina sighed. "Listen, Jag… Six Jedi against that many Sith… Our odds aren't good."
"Since when had that ever stopped you?" Jag said, lowering his voice a little, like he wasn't sure who was around on her end.
"And if I have my way it won't stop us now, either, but I've got a planetful of Sith trying to fix that," she said lightly, and then unfortunately had to follow that up with, "This might be my only chance to get a transmission out."
"You sound very final, Jaina," he said seriously. "This won't be it. Once they get you in the right mood the entire Temple full of Sith won't know how to handle you."
"He says from experience," Jaina said, laughing softly. Okay, fine, he wasn't going to let her say goodbye for real. She was okay with that. If everything went even further to hell, at least she had this, and this was what was important. "What are you up to?"
"Election stupidity. Your situation is much more pressing," Jag told her.
"Well, yeah, but it's the first time in a day I haven't thought about someone trying to kill me," she pointed out. "What's the stupidity?"
He sighed. She knew that sigh. That was the sigh of a man who hated his job and everything that came with it, who was now purposely running for office because it was the right thing to do. Also because he had this dream of introducing the Empire to democracy, which was probably not going to end well. "The instant Daala put herself in the running, she took on an Imperial lieutenant- Pagorski- who has been running a very effective smear campaign. It seems no matter what I do, it's spun against me."
"Welcome to politics, honey," Jaina said.
"Normally I'd welcome an opportunity to leave this office behind, but Daala in charge won't benefit the Empire. If Abeloth seems to have infiltrated the Galactic Alliance government, who's to say she doesn't have a hand in trying to control the Empire as well?"
"Hmm," she said, frowning. "So to win, you have to knock Daala out of the equation."
"Which is proving surprisingly difficult."
"So if Abeloth's on her side, we go after Abeloth. Daala will knock herself out without that backing, did you see what she did to the GA?" Jaina said.
"I have no resources to go after a Force entity," Jag pointed out.
"You have Tahiri," Jaina reminded him, and Jag went quiet. "She doesn't have to face Abeloth, but if she can do some footwork in tracking her, then the Jedi can do the rest. She's smart and resourceful and incredibly tough, and this is exactly why you have her."
Jag went quiet again, considering. "I have the resources to get her out, but not discreetly."
"I'll get you a StealthX," Jaina promised. "And a rack of shadow bombs. I absolutely trust her to be able to do this." And of course being Jaina, she wanted Tahiri to give him a reason to trust her. Always with the second chances.
"I've always loved you for your wonderfully devious mind," Jag said.
She smiled. "It is one of my better qualities. I'll make the arrangements with HQ.. Which means I need to go." She really didn't want to say goodbye, though. She hated the thought that this might be the last time she ever got to talk to him. "I love you, Jagged."
"I love you too," he told her. "I'll see you when you get out."
